Let me tell you a story about the best chip flavour ever…
It begins in Amsterdam, in September 2011. I was there on vacation and as most people do, decided to try all of the fun foods and snacks, including Vlamesse Frites with Mayo. You see, it’s very common in Amsterdam to have a side of dutch mayo, sometimes in different flavours like chipotle, with your fries. Dutch mayo is a bit different than what we’re used to here: it’s a bit sweeter and creamier.
Anyway, after trying this culinary delight I was pleased to see a flavour of Lay’s on the grocery shelf that I assumed to be fries and mayo because of the picture on the bag. That day I was introduced to the glory that is Patatje Joppie, and I will never look back.
Lay’s Patatje Joppie was the winning flavour in the 2011 ‘Maak je Smaak’ (Create your own Taste) competition held by Lay’s Netherlands. Until a few months ago, I thought that the chips were in fact fries and mayo flavour when really they are fries and ‘Joppie Saus’. Joppie Saus is arguably similar to dutch mayo as it’s a popular creamy sauce in the Netherlands.
These chips have such a unique flavour that it’s been hard to find anything comparable when I get random cravings for them. The flavour is creamy, sweet and tangy and upon looking at the ingredients I see that the seasonings include onion, garlic, paprika, cinnamon, celery and mustard-extract. The ingredient that stood out the most is butter fat. I don’t think I’ve come across another chip that lists butter fat in its ingredients so I’ll assume that’s where the creaminess comes from.
I recently came back from another trip to Amsterdam so I have a little bit left in one of the bags I brought back but will soon be scouring the internet for where I can buy these gems online!
